Kenya is looking for up to 1.5 acres in Nairobi’s Gigiri diplomatic district to build permanent offices for its missions to the United Nations agencies based in the city. The missions have worked from rented premises for decades.

The State Department for Foreign Affairs invited landowners and developers to offer parcels, preferably within three kilometres of the UN Complex. The deadline for offers was 13 October 2026.

### What the government wants

The planned complex will house Kenya’s missions to the UN Office at Nairobi (UNON), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat. The government says the missions have rented space since the 1970s, which no longer offers enough room or amenities.

No budget for buying the land or building the offices has been disclosed.

📔

****The brief:** 1 to 1.5 acres, regularly shaped, near major roads, and suitable for institutional, commercial or compatible mixed-use development.

The parcel must also have:

- water, sewerage, electricity and telecommunications access
- a clean title
- at least 50 years left on any lease

Land with disputes, charges, caveats or litigation does not qualify.

### Why Nairobi hosts the UN

UNEP was created in 1972 after the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. Nairobi was chosen as its headquarters that year, making it the first UN headquarters in the Global South. UN-Habitat followed in 1978, after the first UN conference on human settlements. UNON was set up in 1996 to provide administrative and common services to UNEP, UN-Habitat and other UN operations in the region.

Together they have made Nairobi a major centre for environmental and urban-development policy. The new complex would give Kenya’s own diplomats dealing with those bodies a permanent base next to them.
