The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced plans to tackle traffic congestion at the Westlands Roundabout in Nairobi, as calls grow for a flyover similar to the newly opened Ngong Road-Naivasha Road project.
Motorists and residents say a flyover at the busy junction would offer a lasting fix for the heavy Westlands traffic that builds up during peak hours.

KURA says works at the Westlands Roundabout will begin soon.
The programme will also cover other Nairobi roads where congestion persists, giving commuters who use the Westlands corridor daily some hope of relief.
KURA did not confirm that a flyover will be built at Westlands. It said its wider plan is to fix traffic problems at key junctions across the capital, with solutions tailored to the needs of each location.
Meanwhile, work along Waiyaki Way has stepped up. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is building a pedestrian footbridge near the Westlands Roundabout, alongside beautification works that will cause partial road closures for up to one month.
These projects form part of wider efforts to improve mobility on Nairobi’s busiest corridors. Other ongoing interventions include the Kenyatta Avenue-Valley Road viaduct and a Ksh10.85 billion South Korea-funded Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which will digitise and reconfigure 60 major junctions across the city.
Calls for a Westlands overpass grew after President William Ruto commissioned the Ksh3.58 billion Ngong Road-Naivasha Road flyover at Junction Mall. The four-lane elevated structure eases congestion along Ngong Road and includes cycling lanes, pedestrian walkways and improved stormwater drainage.
