KURA gave the explanation in response to questions from the public about the unfinished site with the authority attribut the delay to service relocation by other agencies, including the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). It did not say when the work began or when it will finish.

“KURA is improving this junction with NMT, drainage & ITS works for pedestrians & motorists. Works stalled over service relocation by other agencies; now resolved & the contractor is expediting.” — KURA

The project covers non-motorised transport (NMT) facilities, drainage and intelligent transport systems (ITS) for motorists and pedestrians.

Concerns over the site

Former Law Society of Kenya president and Westlands MP aspirant Nelson Havi raised concerns about excavation near an existing stormwater drain and pedestrian walkway. He said the site had been left incomplete for months and appeared abandoned. He also alleged the works were done to make way for a fast-food restaurant exit.

This is the junction of Prof Wangari Maathai Road and Parklands Road. Kenya Urban Roads Authority excavated an existing storm water drainage and pedestrian walkway to accommodate a Drive In exit at KFC. For months, the poorly undertaken works have remained incomplete and the site has eventually been abandoned. There many things wrong with the agencies in charge of roads in Kenya.

KURA dismissed the claim. It said the works are solely to improve facilities for road users.

Photos from the site by October 17 show piles of soil, rubble and open trenches beside the road, while motorists and pedestrians continue to use the area. The open trenches raise safety and drainage questions until the work is completed.

Other Nairobi projects

KURA says it is stepping up work on other traffic bottlenecks in the city. After the Ngong Road-Naivasha Road flyover, it is fast-tracking the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct, which is due to open by May 2027.
