According to the Westlands Park Scheme Design plan, the route begins west of Ring Road Westlands, near Sarit Centre and the Waiyaki Way interchange approaches. It then follows the river south-east past Muthithi Road, Mpaka Road and Parklands Road, near The Oval. From there it runs beside the Aga Khan Sports Club grounds towards First Parklands Avenue.

The design pairs a natural, open river channel with a continuous green buffer. Plans include indigenous trees, pedestrian walkways and public park facilities.

The park will sit within a designated river control zone that extends 30 to 60 metres from the riverbanks, though the exact amount of land needed for the green corridor will only be confirmed once the field surveys, which are still under way, are complete.

Much of the work involves “de-canalisation”. Meaning, opening sections of the river that have been piped or built over. These include parts of commercial and residential developments and the Oshwal Religious Centre complex.

The Oshwal Religious Centre Committee, led by chairman Samir Chandaria, met the multi-agency team on Friday, October 16, and pledged its support for the restoration and park.

Officials have also consulted residents of Parklands Court, Brookside Drive, Grevillea Grove and Ndovu Lane. Notices have been issued for the removal of structures built directly over the river. Authorities and estate representatives have started a joint exercise to re-mark the corridor, restore the river’s original alignment and fix long-standing culvert bottlenecks along First Parklands Avenue.

The Parklands Residents Association has directed affected landowners within the river corridor to submit their official property documents to the Nairobi Rivers Commission at Ardhi House. The documents will go through technical review to confirm boundaries and which sections fall inside the river reserve.

The park is part of wider Nairobi River regeneration programmes estimated at Sh50 billion. Those programmes aim to improve river health, control pollution and create public spaces, including walking and cycling routes.
